Before the Break: Reflections and Renewals for Student Life Leaders

Before the Break: What We Carry and What We Can Let Go

We're almost there. The turkey is on the horizon, winter break is peeking over the hill—and your inbox is likely full of last-minute meeting requests, make-up assessments, and "Can we talk?" emails from students.

November in student life is a paradox: equal parts gratitude and exhaustion. We're holding space for students who are overwhelmed, teachers who are fried, and families who are quietly struggling. And in the midst of all that, we're also reflecting—on what's gone well, what still needs attention, and what we want to carry forward into the new year.

This week's newsletter is a pause button. A moment to breathe, take stock, and maybe even refill your own cup before the sprint to December. We've included a practical pre-break checklist, a spotlight on what your peers are doing, and a reminder that belonging work doesn't start in January—it begins with how we close the year.

Practical Tools & Resources

Tech Tip: Day One Journal (or Google Forms with student prompts) — Encourage students and staff to try a daily gratitude reflection using simple prompts: "What surprised you today?" "Who made your day better?" "What's one thing you're proud of this week?" Great for advisory, morning meetings, or quiet closure activities before break.

Dean's Pre-Break Checklist — Key Focus Areas:

  • Run a Gratitude Loop — Send a quick thank-you note to three adults and one student who made your life easier this term. Bonus: invite your team to do the same.
  • Name One Thing to Let Go Of — A policy, meeting, or initiative that's become dead weight. It's okay to call time.
  • Ask One Honest Question — To students or staff: "What's one thing we can do better next semester?"
  • Revisit Your Role — Are you spending most of your time on what matters most? If not, what 10% shift could you make?
  • Plan a Personal Reset — Block one afternoon in December for yourself—no meetings, no student fires. Protect that time now.
  • Attend Rooted, Resilient & Rising Conference — Join Dr. Rogers and fellow educators December 4-5 for a powerful gathering focused on well-being and leadership sustainability.
"Pause isn't passive. It's powerful." — Dr. Keba M. Rogers

Dr. Rogers' work provides practical frameworks that help student life leaders move from reactive to intentional, from overwhelmed to grounded. Her approach centers equity, well-being, and the recognition that we cannot pour from empty cups.

Don't miss the Rooted, Resilient & Rising Conference on December 4-5 — a transformative opportunity to reset before the new year.
